The Butcher

One of my first Photography shoots in the area was out at Cape Fear Riverwood (http://capefearriverwood.com/) for the owners Anna and Jessie Jarrell. I went out on a day when they were milling logs on the BIG saw…The Butcher. This thing is right out of a movie…screaming loud…slinging wood chips…and daring you to put something in it that it can’t handle! If you own and operate a saw your biggest enemy is buried nails…the Butcher eats them like appetizers.

Check out the blade on this thing!

The wood even looks and smells a little like meat…only more pungent…first time it’s seen sunshine in over a hundred years! Here’s a “log” some body brought over for milling that day…floated up to their dock. The Butcher just laughed at this thing! See the sparks…that’s the Butcher snacking on a nail.

Finally, back in the old days, they couldn’t figure out why big wooden hulled boats sank so quickly. Turns out these Teredo worms were eating the hulls! Here’s the damage they do…and enjoying a meal!

They starting lining the hulls with copper…stopped the worms…but man discovers Rust and Corrosion! (Rustoleum was still on the drawing board…)
